Irritable bowel syndrome is also known as IBS, is a problem that affects the bowel. Suffers of IBS have intestines the squeezes too hard or not hard enough and cause food to move too quickly or too slowly through the intestines. Hence, it may cause cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation and often very painful.

The actual cause of IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is unknown. Abnormal movements of the lower and greater part of the large intestine (the colon), whether too fast or too slow as seen in some cases of IBS suffers.

In different people the affects and symptoms of IBS are different. Some may have symptoms such as cramping and pain in the abdominal (stomach area) from the bowel movements or irregular and painful periods of diarrhea and constipation (Most people with have either diarrhea or constipation, but some people have both.) and etc.

Your healthcare provided will be able to diagnose if you have IBS from your symptoms. They will confirm this by doing some medical test and also to make sure that you do not have any other diseases that may cause similar symptoms. They may also prescribe you with some medicine to help you to manage IBS.

There are many prevention that you can do yourself to relieve the symptoms of IBS. You can start by changing your diet and reliefing your stress.
